This seven-screen movie theater, sister to the famous Angelika Film Center, has had many lives and incarnations since it was opened in 1926. First it was the Yiddish Art Theater (note the Star of David that is still present today); next it became the Stuyvesant Theater and then it was the Phoenix Theater. In 1992, it finally was restored and converted into the Village East Cinema, which today shows everything from big-budget blockbusters to independent gems.
