The NoMad Hotel
Owner-operators Sydell Group (which also developed the Ace Hotel around the corner) enlisted French designer Jacques Garcia to reinvigorate this twelve-floor, turn-of-the-twentieth-century Beaux Arts building, and the LEED-certified result—inspired by the designer's childhood apartment—is a warm, bohemian-chic spot that encourages lingering. Public spaces include a seasonal rooftop, small gym (located in some converted guest rooms), indoor and outdoor meeting and event rooms, and the understated, lounge-y reception area, where staffers do everything from loan guests iPads and laptops to operate the mobile business center. Because of the building's original layout, the 168 all-king rooms vary in size and shape, but all boast a mix of retro-bespoke style (mahogany desks, vintage handmade rugs, embossed leather headboards, and quirky photos and artwork curated by Paris-based Be-Poles graphic studio). Modern touches, meanwhile, include iHome docking stations in every room. The accommodations are better suited to couples than families or co-workers: Rich fabrics and custom-made linens and robes add to the romantic feel, and many rooms have claw-foot bathtubs right in plain view or only paneled half-walls between the bed and bathrooms. Overseen by Chef Daniel Humm of Eleven Madison Park fame, the restaurant takes up much of the main floor, spilling over from the central glass-roof atrium into a fireplace cove, stately dining room, and cozy bi-level library complete with spiral staircase. — Sandra Ramani
