Swing46

Located on Restaurant Row off of Times Square, this unexpected throwback (amid a bevy of pre-theater eateries) attracts swingers of all ages by evoking a bygone era when crooners and big bands played to the low-dipping well-heeled. A long, dark, low-ceilinged bar area and dining room lead back to a large room looking out on a wide dance floor where couples whirl or press close. In the corners of the room are semi-private banquettes suitable for large parties, while on a wide stage in the front, live bands play nightly, mixing jazz, blues and swing and occasionally luring in off-duty Broadway musicians for post-curtain call appearances. Cocktails are standard issue, if on the expensive side, but between sets a few distinctive, fruity house martinis are served. If you’re not among the good number of hard-core local swing enthusiasts who come by regularly to twist and shout, arrive early in the evening for a quick tutorial. — David S. Hirschman
