Red Hook Lobster Pound
Following a three-month total renovation, this neighborhood favorite and lobster-roll destination refashioned itself into a real restaurant in spring 2015. No longer just a counter-service operation, the Pound now has an appropriately beach-y theme, with picnic-style seating, ship rope tied tightly around skinny pipes, and walls variously painted with nautical flags. Excellent lobster rolls are still the main show, and there are four varieties to pick from: Connecticut (hot, buttered), Maine (cold, mayo), and less-traditional Tuscan (basil vinaigrette) and BLT (you guessed it), but the menu has expanded significantly into americana. There are gooey, over-the-top lobster cheese fries, a massive lobster Cobb salad that could feed five, fried oysters Rockefeller, and an excellent, seriously flaky cod sandwich, the Fish Hook, that will put to rest any concerns you have about eating fish with cheese. For those who’d rather stick to land, there are hot dogs and dry-aged beef burgers, too, and also a short, affordable, and approachable cocktail menu that’s heavy on the vodka and gin. — Chris Crowley
