Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art
The nineteenth-century Greek-revival temple that houses this not-for-profit gallery was nearly torn down to make apartments in the sixties. Thankfully, the city gave it landmark status, and following an endowment from the Staten Island-born Newhouse publishing empire, the 15,000-square-foot architectural gem evolved into the borough's premiere visual-art space. Many of the contemporary artists that are spotlighted are emerging. But there are fairly well-established, if not necessarily well-known, artists on display, too, such as Dawn Clements, whose sprawling ballpoint-pen murals have found their way into the Whitney and MoMA, or Reykjavikan Gudjon Bjarnason, an internationally acclaimed sculptor whose massive, shrapnel-like steel creations have been known to ruffle the feathers of building engineers. — Ben Perkins
