Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie are set to serve as Queen Mermaid and King Neptune for Coney Island’s annual parade of quirky sea creatures, antique cars, floats and performers. Since 1983, this only-in-NYC outdoor pageant has offered a chance for folks to show their mastery of seaside mythology and wearable art. It draws thousands of people, so plan to get there early and snag a prime viewing spot; the procession starts at 1pm, moving east along Surf Avenue from West 21st Street, turns south on West 10th Street and heads back west on the boardwalk, ending in front of Steeplechase Plaza. There is a registration fee to march, but watching the parade is free. Afterward, there’s plenty to explore nearby—check out our guide to Coney Island for the lowdown.
